A teenager who died in an armed attack on a city bus in Mazatlan recorded the terrifying moments experienced by passengers when they were caught in the middle of the chase this Saturday, September 6.
An act of violence shook Mazatlan on the afternoon of Saturday, September 6: a 16-year-old teenager lost his life after being shot while traveling on a city bus on the Hogar del Pescador route.
The minor, identified as Sergio Francisco C., used his cell phone to record the terrifying moments experienced by passengers when they were caught in the middle of a chase by armed men. The attack resulted in the death of the young man and a strong mobilization of security forces. According to preliminary reports, it all began around 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, when the city bus was traveling on Insurgentes Avenue.
According to witnesses and the bus driver, a red car cut across the bus path As the vehicle attempted to move forward, its occupants began shooting at the public transport unit, unleashing chaos and despair among the passengers. Amid the gunfire, Sergio Francisco was shot at least three times in the head, causing him to collapse instantlyy.
The bus continued its journey for several meters until it reached the intersection with the International Highway and Libramiento 2, where the driver finally stopped next to a hotel to call for help. It was there that some passengers noticed that the minor was seriously injured.
Sergio managed to record with his cell phone the moment he and the other passengers were caught in the middle of the armed attack. In the images, later recovered by his family, you can hear the screams of the passengers, desperate calls to emergency numbers, and the cries of children trying to protect themselves on the floor of the bus.
The footage shows the confusion and fear of those traveling in the vehicle, unable to understand what was happening outside the windows. Red Cross paramedics arrived minutes later and rushed the young man to Mazatlán General Hospital, where he was admitted directly to the operating room.
Doctors attempted to save his life, but due to the severity of his injuries, he died around 8:00 PM, after more than three hours of struggle. The news of his death shocked family, friends, and Mazatlan residents, who followed the case through social media and local media. The boy’s sister broke her silence hours after the attack. She used social media to assure him that Sergio was a quiet young man, dedicated to his studies, and that that day he was only going to visit his girlfriend.
He explained that the family arrived at the scene of the attack even before the authorities, thanks to text messages from the young man’s girlfriend that the truck was being pursued. After the attack, the area was cordoned off by members of the Municipal Police, the National Guard, the Navy, and the Investigative Police. The Secretary of Public Security, Jaime Othoniel Barrón Valdez, himself arrived at the scene, although he declined to comment to the press.
The truck had multiple bullet holes, so forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) collected evidence to compile the investigation. Traffic on Insurgentes Avenue and surrounding areas remained closed for several hours, causing heavy traffic congestion. So far, it has not been confirmed whether the attack was directed at the driver, a specific passenger, or an act of indiscriminate violence.
The murder of Sergio Francisco has sparked a wave of reactions in Mazatlán. Social media users have expressed their dismay and demanded justice, while citizen groups have pointed out the lack of security on public transportation.
Family members of the minor, who has become yet another victim of violence, are demanding justice and have asked the authorities not to allow the crime to go unpunished.
