This patient is a resident of the municipality of Izamal, who received timely care at the Regional High Specialty Hospital of the Yucatán Peninsula and has since been discharged.

The State Government, through the Yucatán Ministry of Health (SSY), reports that a case of screwworm myiasis (Cochliomyia hominivorax) was confirmed in a resident of the municipality of Izamal, originally from the state of Tabasco.

The patient was treated a few days ago at the Regional High Specialty Hospital of the Yucatán Peninsula (HRAEPY), where he received timely and specialized care, which led to his favorable recovery and discharge on August 11. He is currently under outpatient monitoring by Health Jurisdiction No. 1.

The detection was made possible thanks to the coordinated efforts of the SSY’s Directorate of Health Prevention and Protection and the Epidemiological Surveillance Department, which immediately implemented prevention and control measures in the area, in coordination with local health authorities and with the support of the National Service of Health, Safety, and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica), to safeguard public health.

The state agency recommends that the population keep wounds clean and covered with dry, safe dressings, practice proper hygiene by washing with sterile solutions, avoid the accumulation of garbage and organic waste that may attract insects, periodically check domestic and farm animals for injuries, and use physical barriers such as mosquito nets and repellents to reduce contact with insects.

It also urges people to immediately go to the nearest health unit at any sign of infection.
