On August 15, 2025, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum made her first official visit to Guatemala, marking a significant step in strengthening regional ties. She arrived in Petén aboard a Mexican Air Force plane and was welcomed by Guatemala’s Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez. Her visit centered on a bilateral meeting with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo, focusing on key issues such as security, migration, infrastructure, and economic development.

The leaders discussed strategic cooperation, including joint infrastructure projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing border development. A major goal was to address shared challenges, such as irregular migration and regional security, through coordinated efforts. Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of fostering investment and job creation in border communities, aiming to reduce economic disparities and improve living conditions.

Following their private meeting, Sheinbaum and Arévalo held a joint press conference at the Comando Aéreo del Norte, where they outlined the agreements reached and reaffirmed their commitment to regional collaboration. The visit also included ceremonial honors and highlighted Mexico’s intent to deepen its engagement with Central American nations.

This diplomatic mission reflects Sheinbaum’s broader strategy to build stronger partnerships in Latin America, promote sustainable development, and enhance Mexico’s leadership role in addressing transnational issues.
