Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the former official will be extradited to Mexico.
Carlos Alberto Treviño Medina, former Pemex director, was arrested on Wednesday, August 13th, in the United States, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on her daily morning press conference.
Treviño Medina was arrested as a result of an extradition request made approximately five years ago and linked to a complaint filed by former Pemex director Emilio Lozoya.
Carlos Alberto Treviño Medina was appointed director of Pemex in 2017 by then-President Enrique Peña Nieto, replacing José Antonio González Anaya.
According to information from Pemex, before becoming director of the state-owned oil company, he served as Corporate Director of Administration and Services at Pemex, as Corporate Director of Finance, and twice as Corporate Director of Administration.
Outside Pemex, he was a senior official in the Ministries of Economy and Energy. He also served as Undersecretary of Expenditures at the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, was Director General of Rural Finance, and Director of Finance at the Mexican Social Security Institute.
Treviño Medina is a graduate of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, where he earned a degree in Food Industry Engineering and two Master’s degrees, one in Business Administration and another in Science with a specialization in Food Engineering.
What is Carlos Treviño Medina accused of?
The president announced that the Attorney General’s Office will report the crimes of which Carlos Treviño Medina is accused. However, in 2021, an arrest warrant was issued against him for criminal association and money laundering, linked to the Ethylene XXI plant case.
Later, in November of that year, an immigration alert was issued against him, and the Attorney General’s Office requested a red notice from Interpol.
