The capibara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), also known as carpincho or chigüiro, is the largest rodent in the world. Native to South America, it thrives in semi-aquatic environments, such as rivers, lakes, and wetlands. With a barrel-shaped body, webbed feet, and a calm demeanor, capibaras are highly social animals that live in groups and communicate through vocalizations. Their herbivorous diet consists mainly of grasses and aquatic plants.

Only one capybara remains at the Culiacán Zoo… where are the others?

Since 2023, the number of capybaras kept at the Culiacán Zoo in Sinaloa has decreased, with only one remaining, according to media reports.

According to these reports, there is currently only one female, when there used to be many.

These events have reignited various controversies surrounding the zoo, as in 2024, the alleged disappearance of a giraffe was also reported. However, its death was confirmed shortly after.

Capibaras have become a viral sensation across social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X. Their relaxed attitude and photogenic appearance—round faces, gentle eyes, and chill vibes—have made them symbols of peace and emotional calm in a high-stress world. Memes and videos often show capibaras lounging with other animals, reinforcing their reputation as nature’s most laid-back creatures.

The trend exploded with the release of a catchy Russian song titled “Capibara”, which loops the animal’s name in a hypnotic rhythm, becoming a favorite audio track for viral videos. Their popularity has also led to a boom in merchandise: plush toys, accessories, and even headwear featuring capibaras are now common in markets across Latin America and online stores.

Maybe that is why these animals are disappearing from the Culiacan Zoo.
