Reynosa authorities have failed to manage funds for flood victims

Citizens of Reynosa complain that not even Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, a member of the Morena political party, has returned to provide support, as promised.

More than two weeks after the atypical storm that hit Reynosa on March 27 and caused severe damage in more than 70 neighborhoods, the local authorities from this city have not managed or promoted, within the State Congress, the creation of a special fund to assist the thousands of affected families.

Despite the magnitude of the disaster, considered by some sectors to be one of the most intense since Hurricane Beulah, and the coordinated effort of all three levels of government to respond immediately to the emergency, to date, no concrete legislative initiative has been observed by local representatives to channel state resources to the affected areas.

From the Reynosa City Council, several council members have publicly called on local legislators to act responsibly and manage an extraordinary fund from the Tamaulipas Congress. This request seeks to strengthen relief and reconstruction efforts, especially given the state executive branch’s willingness to financially support the city.

Reynosa has significant representation in the local Congress, as a significant portion of the representatives are from or reside in the city.

However, so far, no legislative proposal to address the emergency caused by the rains and floods has materialized.

Although some representatives were present during the most critical days of the emergency, the lack of action at the legislative level continues to generate discontent among members of the municipal government, who have had to operate with limited resources to meet the most urgent needs of the victims.
