A U.S. Armed Forces destroyer was deployed to the Gulf of Mexico to deploy its personnel to participate in counternarcotics trafficking operations.
The Pentagon announced the transfer of the Tomahawk-equipped USS Gravely. The Gulf of Mexico was recently declared the “Gulf of America” by President Donald Trump.
“The USS Gravely will be deployed in and around the Gulf of Mexico to engage in the interdiction of drugs and other goods headed for the United States,” said General Alexus G. Grynkewich, director of operations for the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. The destroyer has been active since 2009.
It was in the Mediterranean Sea during the Syrian civil war that broke out in 2013. It has also been used for attacks against Houthis in Yemen. “The ship will work closely with the U.S. Coast Guard, and of course, we won’t share its maneuver plan, but know that this is the mission it will be deployed for. We’ll see what it can do,” Grynkewich said.
In recent weeks, the U.S. Army has deployed thousands of troops to the border with Mexico.
Since the agreements reached between Mexico and the United States to pause the imposition of tariffs, U.S. aircraft, military vessels, and naval vessels have been prowling the Mexican coasts and skies, as well as the border between the two countries.
