Posting this for a friend as a public service. They were traveling around Monterrey on 100 between Federal Hwy. 85 and 40D.

“We were traveling to San Miguel de Allende in the middle of the day on Wednesday, July 31st headed around Monterrey. There was a slow car in the left-hand lane. As we moved to the right to pass, another car came up and they attempted to box us in and run us off the road. There was also a car coming up at a fast speed behind us. We were pushed over off the road and a guy from the 2nd car jumped out of his car and ran back and started beating on our car window with a rock. There was a small gap in front of us and my husband was able to quickly maneuver into the cement ditch and through the open gap and we sped away.

They did not follow. We were in a diesel SUV with US plates. Because our vehicle was high and had a lot of power, we were able to get out of the ditch and take advantage of the opening. We were shaken up but not injured ..and no damage to our car. We sped away and exited onto the cuota to Saltillo.

There is much talk about the dangers of driving near the border and once we were away from the border, we were not so nervous.

That is not the only place where the roads in Mexico are dangerous. This was obviously an attempted carjacking (3 cars working together) and we were fortunate to get away. We have driven to San Miguel many times over the past 15 years. We will not drive again …but will start flying. Until (and if) Mexico gets the road security improved, people should be warned that the roads of Mexico are dangerous and be on high alert at all times.”
