HUAJUAPAN DE LEÓN, Oaxaca.- The collection of the offering is a tradition that takes place the days after the placement of the Altar of the Dead, which is delivered to the people of the community and to those who need it most, in the comisaria of Santa María Xochixtlapilco, in Huajuapan de León.

The collection of the offering takes place after the placement – that is, after November 2 -, and this usually lasts up to 10 hours, where all the people live together, since the announcement of the patron saint festivities is also made, which are in honor of San Diego de Alcalá, which takes place from November 4 to 13.


The offering is offered for the people who accompany the collection, but it is also shared with people who do not have it, and that they do this with the purpose of sharing water and salt; The participation of the municipal president stands out, who heads this tradition and honors the deceased.

The municipal president of Huajuapan, Luis de León Martínez Sánchez, indicated that this tradition is unique in this municipality and it is the second time that he participates, where he goes with his family and collects the offering that the relatives of the deceased offer them.

He said that “I had the opportunity to participate once again in one of the oldest and most emotional customs that prevail in the Santa María Xochixtlapilco, the raising of new offerings from the faithful deceased, we went to the homes of the families who “They shared the bread and fruit they offered this year, to honor the memory of the loved one who has gone to heaven.”

He emphasized that these traditions are worth sharing, that the population knows that there are activities that identify us Mixtecs.

In addition, he invited the population to visit Xochixtlapilco from November 4 to 13, where their patron saint festivities are held, as the monumental figures of different characters that announce their festivities, and secular and religious activities are carried out.

Tradition dictates that monumental figures go out through the main streets of Huajuapan announcing its patron saint’s day.
