Cancun loses occupancy in a year while Akumal shoots it up

The Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Mexico (Sectur), through its “DataTur” portal, in its accumulated data from January to August, reported that Akumal, in the Riviera Maya, is the destination with the best sustained occupancy average in the first eight months of the year, with 84.9%; followed by Playacar, with 83.8%; Cancun with 76.1%; and Playa del Carmen with 69.5%.

It stands out that compared to the same period in 2022, Akumal, in Tulum, grew 6.7 percentage points; Playa Car, in the heart of the Riviera Maya, rose 3.8 percentage points; contrary to Cancún, which decreased one percentage point and Playa del Carmen, which decreased 2.2 percentage points.

According to the hotel occupancy data released by the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, between January and August of this year in beach destinations, the Riviera Maya surpassed Cancun by almost 10 percentage points, as revealed by REPORTUR. mx (Riviera Maya surpasses Cancun in hotel occupancy).

Between January and July 2023, Cancún ranked fifth in hotel occupancy in beach resorts with 76.4% occupancy behind Akumal (85.1%), Playacar (84.1%), Cabo San Lucas (81.2% ) and Nuevo Nayarit (78.4%).
