The indigenous community in this oriental town anchors their Día de los Muertos celebrations on honoring those who have died with distinct dances and offerings. This day is so special to them that they’ve given it its own name: Xantolo.
It is a tradition that dates back to pre-Hispanic times and combines elements of indigenous and Catholic beliefs. Xantolo means “saints” in the local language and refers to the souls of the deceased who return to visit their relatives and friends on November 1st and 2nd.
