1.4% more tourists will arrive at hotels during the Day of the Dead festivities

The Day of the Dead festivities, which will be celebrated from October 27 to November 2, will generate a spill of 41,198 million pesos from the consumption of tourist services in Mexico.

Hotel occupancy nationwide is estimated at 58.3% from October 27 to November 2.

For the Day of the Dead festivities in our country, which includes the period between October 27 and November 2, 2023, it is estimated that the total economic benefit from the consumption of tourist services will be 41,198 million pesos.

This was reported by the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, and added that during these seven days the arrival of 2 million 367 thousand tourists to the hotel is expected, this means an increase of 1.4% compared to the same period in 2019.

Regarding the expected economic benefit from lodging, he noted that it is 3,751 million pesos, and hotel occupancy nationwide is estimated to be 58.3%, this is 1.4 percentage points more compared to the same period in 2022, when the general occupancy during these festivities was 56.9 percent.

Of the total estimated tourists arriving at the hotel, one million 749 thousand will be national, that is, 73.9% of the total, and 619 thousand tourists will be international, that is, 26.1 percent.

Also, it is expected that, this season, 2 million 690 thousand more national tourists will stay in another form of accommodation such as visiting family and friends, as well as in second homes, so the expectation is that in total 4 million 440 thousand national tourists will travel through Mexico during the Day of the Dead festivities.

Torruco Marqués stressed that another 310 thousand tourists, both national and foreign, are staying in shared economy accommodation.

And among the most representative activities in the different destinations of Mexico, he said, is the Day of the Dead Parade in Mexico City, an event that was held for the first time in 2016, and that this year will take place on December 4. November, starting at the Puerta de los Leones, in Chapultepec, towards the Capital Zócalo.

Likewise, in San Andrés Mixquic, in Mexico City, the traditional Alumbrada takes place, in which the light from the candlesof the pantheon is the only illumination at the place.

In Janitzio, Michoacán, one of the most representative Day of the Dead festivities takes place, with the traditional Canoe Parade with butterfly nets full of light, in addition, the pantheon is covered with altars and illuminated with the candles that accompany the entire the night to families awaiting the arrival of their loved ones.

Other traditions that stand out are those of Oaxaca, where they represent the souls of purgatory through troupes, people dressed as characters such as catrinas and calacas, who walk down the street to the rhythm of music; while in Aguascalientes the Skull Festival on San Marcos Island stands out. This destination is also recognized for being the birthplace of the artist José Guadalupe Posada, creator of the iconic Calavera Garbancera, better known as “La Catrina”.

Without forgetting the Xantolo or Fiesta de las Animas in San Luis Potosí; the Hanal Pixán in Yucatán, or food of the souls; and the tradition of Pomuch, Campeche, which consists of digging up the deceased to clean their bones, which are some of the most recognized ceremonies during the Day of the Dead festivities.

In accordance with expectations for this period, the occupancy percentage that will be achieved in selected centers will be:

-Los Cabos, 77.2%

-Cancun, 74.3%

-Puerto Vallarta, 71.5%

-Puebla, 60.7%

-Querétaro, 57.7%

-San Miguel de Allende, 54.7%

-San Cristóbal de las Casas, 43%

-Villahermosa, 45.2%

-Zacatecas, 38% and

-Tuxtla Gutiérrez, 34.9%

It is worth highlighting the increase in occupancy that the destinations where this festival is most representative will have: Oaxaca, 73%; Morelia, 68.1%; Mexico City, 67.4%; Aguascalientes, 62.5 percent.

These 15 selected centers represent 45% of the rooms in the centers monitored by DataTur.

The Day of the Dead festivities trigger tourist activity in each of the 270 places with a vocation, having their characteristic celebration, which contributes to the economic benefit reaching the communities, concluded the head of Sectur.
