After challenging last week the designation of former capital mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as the presidential candidate of the ruling Morena party, Ebrard took another step in his distancing from that organization, without having resigned from it or decided to leave permanently.
Accompanied by senators and federal and local legislators, the former chancellor formalized the formation of his group “El Camino de México”, which will accommodate members of other parties, during a rally in the south of Mexico City to which Several hundred followers came and welcomed him shouting “president, president!”
Ebrard ruled out that the new group could be considered a party. “It’s the way we organize ourselves. “We are a political movement.” Mexican laws limit the creation of parties in the months prior to electoral processes.

In an attempt to discourage threats of divisions in Morena, the leader of that organization, Mario Delgado, said last week that he trusts that the former chancellor will remain in the ruling party and assured that the organization will thoroughly review the challenge to the election process. of the presidential candidate.
Morena chose Sheinbaum at the beginning of the month through five surveys. Ebrard said that his team detected several irregularities in the election process such as the use of social programs to benefit the candidate and the intervention of authorities in the internal party process.
