One of the most anticipated astronomical events of this year is the annular solar eclipse, which will be next Saturday, October 14, since it had not been perceived in Mexican territory for four centuries, and to enjoy this spectacle of nature, the best place to observe it is Yucatán.
Although the last total eclipse that was visible in Mexico occurred on July 11, 1991, this time there will be an optical phenomenon known as the “Ring of Fire”, and it is because the Moon will align between the Sun and the Earth, positioning itself in the furthest point from our planet and it will look smaller, therefore it will not completely cover the “king star” and that luminous ring will stand out around it.
At what time will the ‘Ring of Fire’ be perceived in Yucatán?
The annular solar eclipse will be visible in Yucatán for a period of three hours; starting at 9:45 in the morning and its peak will be at 11:20 in the morning. Due to the “tour” of the stars, the eclipse will culminate shortly after one in the afternoon, but with less intensity.
To celebrate the 400 years of this spectacle, there will be a festival in which there will be special telescopes with filters to observe the eclipse, since if you do so directly, you can damage your eyesight. The venues for the Anula Solar Eclipse Festival will be Maxcanú, Sisal, Tekax, Izamal and Mérida; There will be conferences, workshops, gastronomic, craft and cultural experiences where you will also learn more about the traditions of Yucatan.
