In Quintana Roo, residents reject the construction of a road through the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve. Leaders of the Great Mayan Council and of different Mayan communities in this municipality filed a collective amparo against the Mayan Train and the “Puerta al Mar” project, to which the Morenista governor, Mara Lezama, gave its starting signal. They affirm that the federal government did not carry out the corresponding indigenous consultation, to carry out such works, of which the second is also operated by the Government of the State of Quintana Roo. The work consists of a 55-kilometer road that will reach Vigía Chico and that will cross the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
The Mayans of the municipality and the users of the road to Vigía Chico, which crosses the biodiversity of the reserve, warned that Puerta al Mar is based on a tourism model that will modify and appropriate the region, which will aggravate the environmental problems in the area, inequality that will cause an increase in the cost of basic services.
“The Puerta al Mar project will serve to perpetuate the accumulation of land, money and power for the benefit of a few, by prioritizing public works in favor of tourists and real estate developers instead of covering our basic needs,” such as quality medical care, public lighting, roads of the Mayan communities in the municipality, education and security in the face of the crisis of violence, the statement says:
