Sergio Salomón Céspedes is the new governor of Puebla

After the death of Governor Luis Miguel Barbosa Huerta, the Puebla State Congress appointed Sergio Salomón Céspedes Peregrina (Morena) as the new head of the Executive for the remainder of this six-year term.

Barely a day after the president’s death, the local Legislative Branch met on Wednesday night to appoint the new ruler. Among the names that appeared was that of Céspedes, president of the Political Coordination Board (JUCOPO), for which they chose Eduardo López, also a Morenista, as their new head.

Immediately afterward, the new leadership of the Board of Directors proceeded to grant the deputy an indefinite leave of absence from his position, allowing him to participate in the contest for the appointment as interim, which he won with 38 votes in favor, one against, and zero abstentions.

During his inauguration, the new governor assured that he will continue with the work carried out by Barbosa during his administration, affirming that he also believes in social justice as a pillar of transformation. He later told the media that he does not contemplate any short-term changes in the cabinet.

Who is Sergio Salomon Cespedes?

Sergio Céspedes was born in Tepeaca, Puebla. His political career began in the ranks of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), where he served as president of the tricolor Municipal Steering Committee in the town and later won a local deputy representing the town.

However, he resigned from the party shortly before concluding his assignment, presenting himself as a candidate of the Movimiento Ciudadano for the municipal presidency of Tepeaca -which he won- in 2018. From that position, he operated in favor of Martha Erika Alonso in the controversial elections of that year, an ironic fact considering that he was now a character close to Barbosa himself.

It was precisely this closeness to the president that opened the doors for him in Morena, where he positioned himself as one of the governor’s ‘strong men’, becoming coordinator of the party’s deputies and president of JUCOPO.

Barbosa’s widow supports the new governor

Through her Twitter account, Rosario Orozco, widow of former governor Barbosa, expressed her confidence that Sergio Salomón Céspedes will maintain the transformation effort in Puebla. She also revealed his intention to succeed her husband, as she stated that “times were ahead of him.”
