The Tehuantepec Isthmus Interoceanic Corridor project, the narrowest area in Mexico between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and one of the emblematic infrastructure mega-projects of the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will allow the mobility of 1.4 million of containers annually, specialists pointed out this Wednesday at a meeting of the sector.
In addition, the corridor will become an alternative connection between the two oceans “cheaper and faster than the Panama Canal, ” the experts concluded.
During the work of the Intertraffic Mexico 2022 meeting, Eduardo Romero Fong, coordinator for the development and strategy of the industrial productive sector and welfare of the Corridor, reported that the project reports significant progress and will begin operations in 2023.
He recalled that the work will connect the ports of Salina Cruz, in Oaxaca, with Coatzacoalcos, in Veracruz, in a strip of 303 kilometers in length that will have two seaports, railways, highways, three airports (Minatitlán, Ixtepec, and Huatulco), as well as a gas pipeline and a fiber optic network.
“ The project will decisively promote the development of the Isthmus, the Mexican southeast and, in general, the country’s economy, since it will have the capacity to transport 1.4 million containers annually from port to port in a journey of less than six hours. , cheaper and faster than the Panama Canal”, he highlighted.
Likewise, Fong explained that it is the flagship project of the federal government, along with the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, the Dos Bocas Refinery, and the Mayan Train.
He pointed out that the Interoceanic Corridor will generate by 2050, 1.6% of the national GDP, 50 billion dollars of investment, and 550,000 jobs in the industrial parks that will be installed along the entire route.
In addition, it will be an important magnet for investments, with tax incentives, a free trade zone, customs facilities, tariff reductions, a single window for procedures, as well as the development of housing areas and nature reserves.
On his occasion, Hermilo Pérez Cabrera, director of the Association of Local Authorities of Mexico, agreed that the megaproject will transform the face of the region and will place 79 municipalities at the epicenter of the development of this work, which will have an important detonating impact of wealth and jobs.
On the second day of activities of Intertraffic Mexico 2022, this Wednesday, specialists warned about the “urgent need for Mexico to have sustainable and safe mobility, through the use of multimodal transport systems, as well as the promotion of bicycles and active mobility systems.
Intertraffic is the main meeting of the mobility sector and a meeting point to learn about advances in future mobility, which has been held for 50 years in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
