As of November 18, a new air route will begin operations that will connect Mérida with Guanajuato, which will be in charge of the airline Volaris, as announced by the Secretariat of Tourism Development of Yucatan (Sefotur).

The head of this dependency, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, highlighted the importance of this new route, with which Yucatan will be connected not only with Guanajuato, but with the entire Bajío and central zones of the country, such as Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí and other neighboring states. .

She said that with this, “one of the routes that we needed to achieve the recovery of the pre-pandemic indicators is recovered, which connects us with the Bajío, where we can work hand in hand with Volaris and with the government of the state of Guanajuato to strengthen the joint promotion.

For his part, the commercial director of Volaris, Omar Carrera, commented that this connection will expand the offer so that more people can travel from León, one of the most important cities in the country for those who visit friends and family, “to one of the destinations of tourism and businesses with more growth during the last year. In addition, this route will reduce bus travel time, going from 28 hours on the road to just 2 hours by flight.”

According to Sefotur, in May 2022, Mérida concentrated almost 79 percent of the total number of visitors staying overnight in the entity. It is currently among the ten Mexican destinations with the highest remuneration for tourism, raising the sector’s contribution to state GDP above 11 percent.
