Tropical storm Blas became this Wednesday in category 1 hurricane near the Mexican Pacific coast, reported the National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC).
The NHC said that Blas is currently located 485 km from the port of Manzanillo, in the state of Colima, and that it has maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h.
It is moving at 7 km / h towards the waters of the Pacific Ocean in the northwest, a trend that will continue in the coming days, detailed the NHC.
The institute added that a strengthening of the hurricane is expected in the next 24 hours followed by a weakening towards the end of the week.
Earlier, the Mexican Meteorologic service said that heavy rains are forecast in the states of Guerrero and Michoacán.
The population of the aforementioned states is urged to heed the warnings of the meteorological service and follow the indications of the state, municipal and Civil Protection authorities,” he said in a statement.
Blas is the second hurricane of the 2022 season in the Mexican Pacific after the passage of Agatha, which hit the state of Oaxaca leaving nine people dead and four missing.
Every year Mexico suffers the onslaught of tropical cyclones on both its Pacific and Atlantic coasts, usually between May and November.
In October 1997, Hurricane Paulina hit the Mexican Pacific coast as Hurricane 4, leaving more than 200 dead, with the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero being the most affected.
