Previously, tenants of the market had denounced illicit activities in the place before the local authorities, since the commercial point is allegedly used to distribute illicit merchandise, for which two organized crime groups would dispute its control.

One of the criminal gangs involved in the armed incursion was unofficially identified as Los Motonetos, a criminal group that is characterized by firing shots into the air from various points in San Cristóbal de las Casas, which has resulted in the death of people due to impacts from Lost bullets.
