Simultaneous armed attacks in at least three bars on Avenida Kabah, in Cancún, Quintana Roo, were reported.
CANCUN.- An intense police mobilization took place tonight in Cancun after armed individuals fired multiple shots outside bars located on Kabah Avenue, leaving six injured and one dead.
The Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the attack on social networks and reported the arrest of a person who allegedly participated in the events.
According to the first reports, at 8:00 p.m. there was a simultaneous attack on three bars on Kabah Avenue, in Cancun. Local media indicate that the authorities are investigating whether it was a possible charge for the flat to the owners.
The area remains cordoned off by authorities.
In videos broadcast on social networks, residents can be seen taking shelter from the shooting.
Security authorities activated the red code and established a strong operation in the area to locate the alleged perpetrators.
The state, Mexico’s tourist hub for the Riviera Maya and Cancun, began the year with several events that put the country on alert.
In mid-January, a shooting occurred inside a hotel located in Playa del Carmen, belonging to the prestigious Xcaret chain, leaving two Canadians dead and one injured, presumably involved in drug trafficking.
And a week later, Argentine Federico Mazzoni, who was the manager of a popular establishment in Playa del Carmen, was shot to death.
According to official data, in the first three months of the year, this state accumulates 106 homicides linked to organized crime.
Mexico registered 33,316 homicides in 2021 after the two most violent years in its history, under the mandate of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with 34,688 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.
VIOLENCE ALERT RIVIERA MAYA
In March, authorities found four bodies in Cancun lying in the brush and said they were part of a total of 13 murders committed in the resort by the Jalisco Cartel since September. Most of the bodies were found in vacant lots or houses.
Also in March, dozens of tourists ran out of Cancun’s international airport after hearing rumblings. Flights were suspended for nearly three hours after authorities received reports of suspected shots fired at the airport. Videos posted on social media showed travelers running from a terminal.
The National Guard later said that no shots were fired and that the noises were caused by someone knocking down three upright stands in the terminal.
Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the main source of income from tourism in the country, has been affected by rampant violence.
Prosecutors said in January that the murder of two Canadians near Cancun was motivated by debts between international gangs apparently dedicated to drug and arms trafficking.
In late October, further south in the city of Tulum, two tourists — an Indian-born California travel blogger and a German — were caught in an apparent crossfire by rival drug traffickers and killed.
