The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) announced that in December 2021, Mexico received three million 677 thousand 895 foreign tourists, according to the results of the International Travelers Survey (EVI).
Inegi pointed out that the study, which includes data from the Internment Tourism Survey (ETI) and the Border Travelers Survey (EVF), is intended to publicize the number of international visitors who entered and left the country, as well as as the expenses incurred by them.
In this way, he pointed out that during the last month of last year, Mexico received five million 963 thousand 378 visitors, of which three million 677 thousand 895 were international tourists.
These figures represent an annual variation of 37.7% since during the same month of 2020 (during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic), foreign visitors totaled two million 628 thousand 062, while for the same month of 2019 there were four million 714 thousand 361 tourists.
However, the recovery in this sector is still far from reaching the figures for the year before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. And it is that during the last month of 2019, the number of foreign visitors reached 4.71 million, so there is still a drop of about 21.3%.
The main rebound was in tourists arriving by air, which in December 2020 represented 1.05 million people, while in the same month of 2021 there were about 2 million travelers, 90.9% more. Border tourists, on the other hand, fell 9.3% year-on-year in December to one million travelers.
In the case of inbound tourists (national), the Survey indicates that in December 2020 there was a total of two million 638 thousand 077, while in December 2020 it was one million 482 thousand 246, while in December 2019 was two million 715 thousand 240 visitors.
