Cruise ships return to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, after a two-year absence

The cruise will stay one night in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, in Guerrero, and it is expected that there will be a significant economic spill.

This residential cruise ship, called The World, made a stop at the port of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, where it is expected to reactivate tourism in Guerrero, hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This cruise is considered one of the most luxurious in the world since each cabin is a suite and has its own owner as if it were a floating condominium in which people with high purchasing power of various nationalities travel.

On this luxurious $ 380 million ship, tourists travel from Australia, Asia, South Africa, North America, and Europe.

Authorities of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, foresee that the ship will stay one night in the port and will continue its journey through various countries of the world.

Cruise ships will generate economic income in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo

Jesús Gallegos Galván, director of tourism for Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, explained that the arrival of the cruise ship meant an important day.

“We have the return of cruises, the reactivation of cruise tourism in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo and it arrives with this ship called The World, it is a different vessel, it is the only residential cruise that is sailing all over the world and today it is stopover here in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo with approximately 330 people among the passengers plus the crew ”.

The arrival of the cruise will leave an economic spill in various turns of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, ranging from tourist guides, restaurants, taxi drivers, and boatmen.

The ship will spend the night in the bay and will leave early on Thursday, December 16, so for a whole day.

Some passengers were greeted by Governor Evelyn Salgado. 

The luxurious cruise ship was received without inconvenience and escorted by the Harbor Master’s Office and the Secretary of the Navy.

The shipowners went down by means of tenders and upon reaching the Main beach pier they found health surveillance filters to ensure compliance with the protocols against Covid-19.

In addition, stalls selling handicrafts were set up on the premises to benefit local artisans.

“It is an economic spill that is not contemplated within the municipality, it is something that comes extra both boat drivers, taxi drivers, tourist guides, and restaurants, everyone gets a bit of the spill left by cruise ships,”

In addition to the pandemic, Hurricane “Rick” caused some damage in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo at the end of October, however, the port and the airport remained standing for the reactivation of tourism.
