Although on assuming office last April, Ambassador Mignot acknowledged that European companies in the sector are “concerned” about the energy reforms promoted by López Obrador, this time he did not take a position on the matter, according to the statement.
The Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Mexico offered the Government of this country cooperation for the energy transition after the “Week of the role of energy efficiency in the post-COVID economic recovery ”, Which concluded this Thursday.
The EU Ambassador to Mexico, Gautier Mignot, pointed out that “Team Europe” identifies as one of its four priorities in cooperation with Mexico the energy transition, which consists of gradually reducing fossil fuels.
“As forerunners in the implementation of ambitious energy efficiency policies and measures, the EU, its member states and the European Investment Bank – the so-called ‘Team Europe’ – are always ready to share our experiences through extended collaboration”, Mignot said, according to a statement.
The virtual events, which took place over four days, took place while Mexico is discussing the electricity reform of the President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who sent the constitutional initiative to Congress last week.
The president intends to establish that the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the state company, controls 54 percent of the electricity generation market and that the energy transition is “in charge of the State.”
“The speakers agreed that an energy efficiency is an indispensable tool in the post-COVID economic recovery and in climate action at both the local and federal levels,” the EU report stated.
On the EU side, representatives of the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Romania participated.
Representing Mexico were officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC) and state governments of Campeche, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán.
European experts recalled that the European Commission included energy efficiency in a recent package of legislative proposals for the EU to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030.
