Profeco will release the names of 33 brands of instant soups which underwent 363 tests and those that can be taken off the market

The head of Profeco reported that they will withdraw from the market at least two imported brands of instant soups that cause damage to health and use misleading advertising for their sale.

The head of the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco), Ricardo Sheffield, reported that they will withdraw from the market at least two imported brands of instant soups that cause damage to health and use misleading advertising for their sale.

“Yes, without a doubt, at least two products are going to be withdrawn from the market, by the way, both imported,” he said in an interview with Milenio.

The official pointed out that in the Consumer Magazine of October a scientific study was presented of the different brands of soups that are marketed in the country, where he found potential damage to health for the Mexican population.

“One of the analyzes we carry out has to do with these instant soups that have become very popular in the country, who use them a lot to ‘kill hunger’, but you have to be careful, they are not going to kill more than hunger”, said.

He explained that the analyzes obtained gave important results on the real nutritional value of these food products, the packaging in which they are presented and the risk they represent to health, in some cases both in the content and the packaging, added to the fact that some have misleading advertising.

What do instant soups contain?

  • Carbohydrates (from cereals such as rice or pasta).
  • Variable amounts of fat and protein.
  • An energy intake that can range from 29 to 230 kilocalories per 100 grams of prepared product.
  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): a common food additive in processed foods, which is extracted from beets or sugar cane to make the tongue more perceptive to seasonings.

Some studies have linked MSG with symptoms such as headache, suffocation, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, shortness of breath and sweating, Profeco noted, which is why it recommended not consuming the instant soups.

In addition, he stressed that they do not nourish because the flavor they provide is not based on vegetables and meat, but on flavorings that are not healthy for the body.

Finally, he added that their caloric intake is 270 to 334 kilocalories, similar to two tacos with beans, a ham sandwich or a can of tuna, but instant soups have low levels of protein and high levels of sodium.
