AMLO government divides Mexico into 5 regions to address the 50 most violent municipalities

Rosa Icela Rodríguez, head of the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported that in order to prevent criminal activities and address the causes of the increase in crime incidence in the 50 most violent municipalities in the country – which account for 47.8% of homicides fraudulent – the country will be divided into five regions. 

In the morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the National Palace on Wednesday, Rodríguez indicated that this focused intervention will promote wellness programs, attention to addictions, services and recovery of public spaces. 

“Given the results in the care of the 15 municipalities, the intervention is being extended to 50 municipalities. Now they concentrate – these 50 municipalities – 47% of the intentional homicides in the country; that is, of the more than 2,400 municipalities, 50 municipalities where homicides are concentrated and intervention is going to proceed, a reinforcement in these municipalities.

“We divide the country into five regions: Northwest, with 13 municipalities that represent 19.5%; Occidente, with 17 municipalities that represent 15.3%; the Northeast region, which are three municipalities and which represent 2.1%; Center, with 14 municipalities and represent 8.7%; and Sureste, which are three municipalities and represent 2.2%. 

The head of the SSPC indicated that this targeting seeks the prevention of crimes, addictions, as well as giving more attention to the population through social programs.

“That is, to prevent criminal activities and address the causes of incidence in targeted areas, bring wellness programs, prevention of addictions. In general, to also attend joint actions that allow improving the results in the investigations of the cases, both in the matter of organized crime, as well as to generate synergies between the actors for the correct judicialization, as well as to build peace in these municipalities. 

“Everything is aimed at the tranquility and peace of the inhabitants,” said Rosa Icela Rodríguez.
