The Sierra Madre Occidental is the major mountain range system of the North American Cordillera, that runs northwest-southeast through northwestern and western Mexico, and along the Gulf of California. The Sierra Madre is part of the American Cordillera, a chain of mountain ranges (cordillera) that consists of an almost continuous sequence of mountain ranges that form the western ‘backbone’ of North America, Central America, South America and West Antarctica.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) ranked Mexico among the top three opium-producing countries, along with Afghanistan and Myanmar.
In a report issued within the framework of the International Day to Combat Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the institution detailed that the nation is the third with the largest cultivation area for poppies in the world.

Likewise, large concentrations of crops were found north of Nayarit and in the mountainous area of the Sierra Madre del Sur, especially in Guerrero and Oaxaca.
