Tec de Monterrey among the best universities in the world, according to QS

Tecnológico de Monterrey is number 30 globally among private universities and remains the number 1 private university in Mexico.

Tecnológico de Monterrey is placed among the top 200 universities in the world for the fifth consecutive year, according to the QS World University Rankings 2022. This organization, which ranks the best higher education institutions, ranked Tec de Monterrey number 161 among the 1,673 universities worldwide that participated in the ranking. In this latest edition, Tec de Monterrey consolidated its spot as the number 1 private university in Mexico and the 30th in the world. In addition, it reaffirmed its position within the Top 5 of Latin America.

The QS World University Rankings is one of the most prestigious university rankings globally due to its methodology and the volume of information it processes for its production.

Tec’s commitment to research

In previous years, Tecnológico de Monterrey participated in the QS World University Rankings with data only from the campuses with significant research activity, as agreed with the ranker. However, beginning in 2020, Tec decided to participate in these rankings with the integrated information of its 26 campuses to fortify research.

Although Tec de Monterrey has been committed since its founding to research, in its Strategic Plan 2025, the university builds on its pillars of the three “i” s –Investigation (research), Innovation, and Internationalization. According to David Garza, Rector and Executive President of Tecnológico de Monterrey, the institution will seek to strengthen itself through research as prescribed by this strategic plan.

For Guillermo Torre, Rector of TecSalud and Vice-President of Research at Tec de Monterrey, the institution fixed research as a priority, making it the main engine to elevate its reputation ultimately. “Today, we must commit to research because it is a guiding axis in the vast majority of higher education institutions. We know well that if we do not emphasize this area, there will be no development for societies,” Torre commented.

For his part, Arturo Molina, Vice-Rector of Research and Technology Transfer for the institution, remarked that for this ranking, Tec de Monterrey submitted data from the entire institution to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and not just from the campuses that carried out significant research. “Now, we will be representing a single Tec. Because of this, and due to more significant protagonism by universities from different countries that entered this edition, the institution descended six positions,” Molina said. “Additionally, for this 2022 edition, more universities from other countries registered, the same that played more active roles, which changed the behavior of the results compared to the previous year,” added the Vice-Rector for Research.

For Neil Hernández, Director of Technology Transfer at Tec de Monterrey, presenting itself as a single Tec is to bet on impacting the different indicators of this ranking as only a truly national institution can do. “We decided to submit our information as an entire institution to develop the full potential of teachers and students.”

Academic reputation and among employers: Tec de Monterrey’s strengths

This year, the indicators that most supported Tecnológico de Monterrey’s positioning were “Reputation among employers” and “Academic reputation.” In “Reputation among employers,” Tec climbed five positions from number 56 to 51, consolidating as Tec’s best indicator in this ranking. In the category of “Academic reputation,” the institution rose 18 positions, from 198 to 180.

Neil Hernández, Director of Technology Transfer at Tec de Monterrey, explains that this improvement in the category of “Academic Reputation” was due to a growth in citations and publications. “This period 2020-2021 saw near-exponential growth: the impact of citations and publications grew 64% and 24%, respectively,” Hernández said.

With 1300 universities worldwide, this year’s college rankings are the largest in the QS World University Rankings history. Each institution has been evaluated according to six core metrics:

  1. Academic reputation (40%)
  2. Reputation among employers (10%)
  3. Faculty/student ratio (20%)
  4. Research citations per professor (20%)
  5. International professors (5%)
  6. International students (5%)
