Fonatur requested 238 million pesos to start the development of solar parks in the entities where the Mayan Train is being built.

The National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) requested some 238 million pesos (mp) to start the development of ten solar parks in different entities to ‘move’ the Mayan Train, confirmed the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP).

He also confirmed that the resources will be used to carry out pre-investment studies that will guarantee the possibility of building and operating the parks that will supply power to the train and to the Integrally Planned Centers (CIPs).

These centers are located in Cancun and Cozumel, in Quintana Roo, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, in Guerrero; Los Cabos and Loreto, in Baja California Sur; Playa Espíritu, in Sinaloa; Huatulco, in Oaxaca; and Nayarit, published Tabasco TODAY.

According to a document, “the benefits of the project are, in addition to the fulfillment of the Mission and Vision of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism, Fonatur, of making sustainable tourism investments; generate green energy for the CIPs and the Mayan Train ”.

The first pre-investment study must present the development of the technical, legal and financial model that allows the construction of these solar plants, in collaboration with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and with the participation of the Development Bank.

The second refers to those necessary to define and develop ten projects in a particular way and to be able to tender and build them, according to a publication by Expansión. In addition, own or third-party land would be used.

According to information from El Universal, two of these solar parks would be in Baja California Sur and the Yucatan Peninsula, and others in Guerrero, Oaxaca, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. Thus, it will be from sections three and five of the Mayan Train that clean energy is used.

Fonatur indicated that, at the end of 2020, according to estimates by the National Energy Control Center (Cenace), the Yucatan Peninsula had an installed capacity of 2,746 megawatts (MW). On the other hand, in Baja California Sur it had an installed capacity of 829 MS for the generation of electricity.
