Feminist protest lasts almost 6 hours in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo. A feminist protest against gender violence lasted about six hours, causing damage to many public buildings and a clash with police officers in the streets of Cancun.

The headquarters of the Municipal Transit Directorate was partially destroyed.

The demonstration follows the series of protests that erupted in this city over the femicide of young Bianca Alexis. One of the street actions culminated last week with shots being fired by the police, which led to the removal of security commanders, including the head of Public Security in the state, Alberto Capella.

At the end of the mobilization this Sunday, anti-riot police groups entered Xcaret Avenue, where judicial facilities and the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) of the northern part of the State are also located. All the buildings were heavily damaged.

At their first stop, the group of nonconformists, mostly women, reached the municipal palace, where they tried to break the steel sheets with which the entire building was protected.

At that point, male protesters joined, who arrived armed with tubes and sticks, broke security cameras, candy machines, glass and caused a small fire in the Inspection offices.

Later the group advanced towards the facilities of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), where they caused fires in two public buildings and destroyed the Municipal Transit headquarters, where they managed to enter.

After several hours of knocking on the doors of the FGE, the protesters managed to make a small opening so that municipal police immediately fired tear gas, while riot police surrounded the area.

The protesters ran in the direction of the Chedraui self-service store, where some were detained.

Finally the demonstration dispersed, while the anti-riots took up positions in front of the FGE.
