The Mexican State of Zacatecas has been elected American Capital of Culture 2021, according to what the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals reported today.

The President of the Bureau, Xavier Tudela, has declared that the election of the State of Zacatecas as the American Capital of Culture 2021 “has been for three different reasons as well as complementary; for the quality of the candidacy project; because of the institutional consensus around the candidacy and for wanting to make Cultural Capital a project of sum, cohesion and social inclusion as well as an instrument of economic development ”.

With the election of Zacatecas as the American Capital of Culture 2021, Mexico consolidates its leadership in designations of American Capitals of Culture, with 6 cultural capitals followed by Chile and Brazil with 4 nominations. Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela have each had an American Capital of Culture.

Zacatecas is one of the thirty-one states that, together with Mexico City, make up the United Mexican States. It has an area of ​​77,684 km² and a population of one million seven hundred thousand inhabitants. The Entity, founded in 1,588, is divided into 58 municipalities, one of which, the Capital City, bears the same name as the State.

In Zacatecas there are many monuments internationally recognized for their baroque, gothic, churrigueresque and colonial styles. Its Cathedral stands out, chosen by citizen vote as the first Treasure of the Cultural Heritage of Zacatecas.
