Ajijic is one of the most colorful towns in Jalisco. It is located on the shores of Lake Chapala, in the municipality of the same name. Although there are no official figures, the native population of Ajijic calculates that about 20,000 foreigners live in this town, mainly from the United States, Canada, and England.

The word Ajijic comes from the Nahuatl Axixic and means a place where water springs. From 1930 and 1940, this small cobbled town with some colonial structures became the destination of thousands of foreigners due to its climate.

Not all foreigners reside in Chapala throughout the year, some of them only do so during the freezing winter seasons in northern countries. Most immigrants choose this destination at retirement age, so the atmosphere is familiar and calm.

The latter has also translated into improvements in public security for the population, as well as a source of income for different sectors. On the cultural side, Ajijic was one of the nutrition points for artists such as David Alfaro Siqueiros and Agustín Yáñez.

Fences with murals, adobe houses with two waters and green hills have made this place a cosmopolitan town. Ajijic is the favorite destination in Mexico of the intellectual and artistic sectors of the United States.

Due to this, Ajijic lives a cultural conversion. In its streets, it is common to find bilingual advertisements, art galleries, European gastronomy restaurants, and coffee shops with reading circles in other languages. However, there are also local gastronomic attractions, some specialized in charales and mojarras from the lake.

Is the Ajijic area perfect for all people and in all circumstances?  Of course not, because no such place exists other than in our individual imaginations.  There are lots of things wrong with the Ajijic area, and if you’re considering moving there, you need to get a full picture.
