Francisco Vázquez, coordinator of Morena’s parliamentary group in the State of Mexico Congress and president of the Junta de Coordinación Política, has become the center of controversy after being exposed attending Super Bowl LX in California. Despite attempts to keep his trip discreet, images of Vázquez at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on February 8 were circulated online, reportedly shared by his own daughter. The footage showed the legislator enjoying the game alongside his wife and children.

The revelation has triggered strong reactions within Morena. Senator Higinio Martínez, a prominent figure in the Morena party, criticized Vázquez’s attendance, calling it an “excess” that contradicts Morena’s commitment to austerity. Martínez emphasized that party leaders must demonstrate coherence with the principles they promote, particularly when advocating for modesty in public service.

The incident has also fueled public debate about whether a legislator’s salary could realistically cover the high costs of attending such an event. Commentators, including journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva, questioned the affordability of Super Bowl tickets, especially in the premium section where Vázquez and his family were seated.

So far, Vázquez has not issued a public statement regarding the controversy. His silence has left room for speculation and criticism, with opponents and members of his own party highlighting the potential damage to Morena’s image. The episode underscores ongoing tensions within the party over maintaining credibility while balancing personal lifestyles with political commitments.
