This Saturday, Mexican sport experienced a historic day at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games with the debut of Lasse Gaxiola in the giant alpine skiing slalom.

The young athlete finished in 53rd position in the competition and starred in an unprecedented moment by sharing the Olympic edition with his mother, Sarah Schleper, becoming the first mother-son duo to compete together in a Winter Olympic Games.

At just 18 years old, Gaxiola also set a precedent by becoming the youngest Mexican to participate in a winter competition, consolidating a performance that reinforces Mexico’s presence in an unusual discipline within the Olympic program.

Gaxiola’s Olympic debut took place in the giant slalom, where she managed to complete both rounds of the event. On his first descent, the Mexican skier recorded a time of 1:27.23, a mark that placed him in 56th place in the provisional classification.

Despite the nerves of his first Olympic final, Gaxiola maintained control on the track and secured his pass to the second race, on a day that had a special meaning as it coincided with the seventh Olympic participation of his mother, Sarah Schleper, also representing Mexico.

In the second descent, Lasse improved his performance by stopping the clock at 1:20.85, for a cumulative time of 2:48.08, a result that placed him in 53rd position in the giant slalom.
