The following is a letter from a Mexican citizen named Bertha Castilla to the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum:
Dear Claudia:
Please accept my most enthusiastic congratulations on having reached the highest office as a public servant in this country. It is no small feat; turning a personal achievement into a collective debacle requires talent, perseverance, and admirable discipline. In that sense, your administration is already a case study.
All of Mexico has witnessed how your incompetence, your incapacity, and your mistakes in attempting to govern have achieved something that seemed impossible: to set back decades in development, economic growth, and democratic maturity in record time. Where other governments barely stumble, you have perfected the art of freefall.
López Obrador had already begun the decline, it is true. But in his case, it was almost consistent with his biography: a university fossil with mediocre grades, limited education, and a political vision fueled by long-standing social resentments.
Yours, on the other hand, is truly astonishing. With a master’s degree, a doctorate, and scientific credentials, you have managed to demonstrate that advanced education does not immunize against lousy public management. It is, it must be admitted, a historic shock; abysmal, but a shock nonetheless.
Probably no one—not even yourself—imagined that you could be so incompetent, so indolent, and so cold in the face of the consequences of your decisions.
Governing guided by outdated principles, inspired by a repeatedly failed and impoverishing socialism, is not stubbornness: it is an experimental gamble with millions of people like guinea pigs.
Congratulations, Claudia. You have done it. You will go down in history as the most costly mistake made by those who placed their vote in you. Right in an era of global opportunities and economic relocation, you chose to cling to retrograde ideas that scare away investment and the future with equal effectiveness.
While much of Latin America is turning its political course in search of pragmatism, you emerge as an ideological relic, a proud standard-bearer of a left that has demonstrated its capacity to distribute scarcity with admirable efficiency. It is a feat against the tide that deserves, at the very least, rhetorical recognition.
Congratulations again. It is a triumph that will undoubtedly be celebrated with great enthusiasm… although surely outside the National Palace, alone in your living room; very likely, and for the good of Mexico, before 2030.
Sincerely,
A Mexican citizen observing history in real time.
