State Representative José Antonio Jiménez is under scrutiny from the Governor of Campeche after opposing the state’s debt.

Due to the dispute between Representative José Antonio Jiménez Gutiérrez and the Governor of Campeche, Layda Sansores, the Morena party member filed for legal protection to avoid arrest.

According to the newspaper El Universal, the legal action was filed on February 4th with the Second District Court in Campeche to shield himself from any future arrest warrants that might be issued against him.

The state legislator’s decision is not coincidental, as on February 1st, the first day of the legislative session in the state, the State Congress was surrounded by state police and rumors began circulating that Jiménez Gutiérrez had been arrested.

The rift between Morena legislators and the governor occurred after they decided not to support Layda’s proposal in the economic package to take on a one billion peso debt.

As a consequence, Jiménez was removed from the presidency of the Campeche Congress on January 31, as Morena legislators decided to support the slate proposed by the Citizens’ Movement (MC), which was also supported by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

Faced with the siege of the Congress and fearing reprisals from the governor, who has shown no hesitation in censoring the media, the local deputies decided to invoke parliamentary immunity to protect themselves from her actions.

For its part, the State Attorney General’s Office denied that an operation had been carried out against the legislator, asserting that the officers present at the Congress were conducting a routine patrol and that their agents only “stopped momentarily in the area.”

Similarly, Jackson Villacís denied that there were any investigations against the Morena member, according to El Universal.

The scandal that has erupted in the state has generated unease within Morena to the point that Ricardo Monreal, who also had disagreements with Layda, pointed out that the matter affects the movement and the unity of Morena, especially heading into the 2027 elections.
