In a strategic move that underscores the importance of experienced talent in senior management, HSBC Mexico announced the appointment of José Antonio Meade Kuribeña as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors. This handover, effective February 3, 2026, positions one of the brightest minds in Mexican economics and public policy at the forefront of the institution’s strategic oversight.

The profile of a global leader

José Antonio Meade has an exceptional curriculum that combines elite academia with public practice at the highest level. He holds a Law Degree from UNAM, a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from ITAM , and a PhD in Economics from Yale University. His time in public service is historic: he has been the only Mexican to head four different ministries of state:

  • Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (in two periods).
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Ministry of Social Development.
  • Ministry of Energy.

Strengthening Corporate Governance

Meade replaces Jorge Arce as chairman of the Board, who has done outstanding work since 2022 and will continue to serve as executive director and CEO of the bank. The structure of the Board of Directors is also strengthened with the presence of high-level independent directors such as Claudia Jañez and Vanessa Rubio Márquez, ensuring world-class governance.

This appointment comes at a crucial time for banking in Mexico, where digitalization and the dynamics of international trade demand leaders with a deep understanding of markets and regulations. The addition of José Antonio Meade not only benefits HSBC but also raises the bar for financial leadership across the country.
