Diego N., the mayor of Tequila, Jalisco, was arrested along with three other officials as part of Operation Swarm.

Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), confirmed the news on social media.

He stated that the arrests followed up on Operation Swarm, which resulted in the detention of three mayors from the State of Mexico. The operation, coordinated with the Ministry of Defense, the Navy (Semar), and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), stemmed from numerous citizen complaints.

Along with Diego N., a member of the Morena party, three other municipal officials were arrested: the directors of Public Safety, Cadastre and Property Tax, and Public Works. These actions are part of the National Strategy against Extortion and the fight against corruption, as mandated by Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

According to local media, the arrest occurred on Thursday, February 5th. The Morena party mayor is accused of leading a corruption ring within the Tequila City Hall.

The public officials allegedly extorted money from business owners and merchants in the region’s breweries and tequila distilleries. Authorities also suspect the group embezzled public funds from the municipality.

Furthermore, the investigation indicates that the mayor maintained alleged ties to a cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a criminal organization with a strong presence in the state.
