Even though the Mexican Caribbean wants to be the entry point for tourists for the 2026 World Cup, Colombians are making their reservations directly to the venues where the sports event will be held in Mexico, without considering connecting with the destinations of Quintana Roo, Jean Claude Bessudo, president of the Aviatur Group, told REPORTUR. co.

“They are not using the Mexican Caribbean for connections; most request their flights via Mexico City and/or Guadalajara,” Bessudo told this newspaper.

Likewise, in view of Holy Week, Aviatur has not noticed that reservations to traditional destinations such as the Mexican Caribbean and the Dominican Republic have dropped for the World Cup.

“Applications have remained at the same percentage both to the Dominican Republic and the Mexican Caribbean, as well as to all destinations. In general, Colombians book in advance, unless some last-minute promotion is published,” they told REPORTUR.co.

On the other hand, the decline of the dollar has affected their income, so they are making “efforts to increase sales and greater efficiency to be able to compensate for the effects of the fall of the dollar,” Bessudo told this newspaper.

Aviatur is working on increasing the inventory of hotels in the world to 750,000 properties for online sale, “with prepayment and payment at destination, both at Aviatur and at our points of sale,” said Bessudo.

In addition, they are promoting Aviatur’s specialized products such as sports tourism, religious tourism, student tourism, nature tourism, incentive trips and conventions.

Bessudo mentioned that the company’s challenges have to do with achieving a greater increase in the sale of vacation tourism in all regions of the country, promoting inbound tourism to Colombia with a varied offer and connecting the brand to new segments of travelers in Colombia.

As reported by REPORTUR.mx, Bernardo Cueto, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (Sedetur), told REPORTUR.mx in August 2025 that they have carried out several actions to attract tourists from the 2026 World Cup to the State, highlighting, among others, that the Cancun airport is the only one that has direct flights from all the World Cup venues and is a mandatory stop in Mexico. (Cancun: the only airport with direct flights to World Cup venues).
