Claudia Sheinbaum Pushes for Stronger North American Ties

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Thursday that her administration will intensify diplomatic efforts with the United States and Canada to strengthen trade and security cooperation. Speaking at her daily mañanera press conference, Sheinbaum revealed that Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard will travel to Washington next week to meet with U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, to advance negotiations on a new trade framework.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico’s economy closed 2025 with stronger-than-expected growth, citing a 2.3% expansion in December driven by services. She framed this as evidence that Mexico is well-positioned to deepen regional integration.

On security, Sheinbaum highlighted ongoing collaboration with North American counterparts to address organized crime. She pointed to community-based programs in Puebla—such as peace roundtables, reforestation projects, and the “Yes to Disarming, Yes to Peace” initiative—as examples of how addressing root causes can reduce violence.

Analysts say Sheinbaum’s diplomatic push reflects Mexico’s desire to balance economic growth with security stability. The upcoming talks in Washington will be closely watched, as they could reshape Mexico’s role in North America’s economic and security architecture.
