Baja California Sur Raises Tourist Tax

Travelers heading to Baja California Sur in 2026 will face a slightly higher “Embrace It” tourist tax. The state government confirmed on Thursday, January 22, that the levy, introduced in July 2025, has been raised from MXN 470 to MXN 488 per visitor.

Officials say the increase will fund sustainable tourism projects, infrastructure upgrades, and environmental conservation initiatives. The tax applies to international visitors staying in the state, with exemptions for certain categories such as diplomats and children.

Local authorities argue the adjustment is modest but necessary to support the region’s booming tourism industry, which includes destinations like Los Cabos and La Paz. Tourism operators have expressed cautious support, noting that the funds could improve services and preserve natural attractions.

Travel experts advise visitors to factor the tax into their budgets, as it is collected separately from hotel fees. Despite the increase, Baja California Sur remains one of Mexico’s most popular destinations, with international arrivals expected to rise in 2026.
