The state Health Department has asked Chiapas mayors to refrain from holding mass gatherings from December 21 to March 20 to help reduce the risk of contagion.
Through circular IS/DSP/APS/017883/2025, the Chiapas State Health Department reports 45 cases in 15 municipalities: Mitontic, San Cristóbal, San Juan Chamula, Chenalhó, San Juan Cancuc, Zinacantán, San Andrés Larráinzar, San Fernando, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Ocozocoautla, Chiapa de Corzo, Suchiapa, Simojovel, Berriozal, and Comitán.
The document, addressed to the mayor of Tapachula, Yamil Melgar, requests his collaboration with the State Health Department in case control, vaccination programs, and the establishment of isolation protocols for emergencies or public health risks.
Events were suspended from December 21 to March 20.
The mayor is asked to avoid holding mass gatherings, such as posadas, fairs, parades, sporting events, and others, during the period from December 21 to March 20, although this period may be extended “depending on the circulation of the virus.”
“This public health measure will reduce the risk of contagion, slow the rate of transmission, and also protect the child population through the rapid response plan for Measles Outbreak Control.”
The Ministry of Health issued the following message to the general public: “It is vitally important to mention that measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes; it can cause serious symptoms, severe and permanent complications, and even death.”
