The increase in infections from the mutation of the influenza A virus known as the H3N2 super flu has put several countries in Europe and the United States on alert due to the high spread of this new strain.

In Mexico, states such as Morelos, Nuevo León, and Michoacán have called on the population to take precautions against this variant. Regarding registered cases of influenza A (H3N2), influenza B, and H1N1, there are 50 confirmed cases in Morelos.

According to the Pan American Health Organization, during the month of November, there was a considerable increase in influenza A infections in both the Americas and Europe. In some cases, it presented as seasonal flu, while others required medical attention.

What is the H3N2 super flu?

Known as the H3N2 superflu, this variant of influenza A is a highly contagious pathogen that can cause respiratory illnesses in humans, with severe symptoms that can primarily affect vulnerable populations: older adults, children, and people with chronic illnesses.

The H3N2 superflu is transmitted through the expulsion of the virus when coughing, sneezing, or talking; saliva droplets increase the spread of the disease, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

Health organizations recommend that people get vaccinated at a health center this winter season, wear face masks, especially in enclosed spaces, to avoid infection, wash their hands frequently, and avoid contact with sick people.

Symptoms of the H3N2 Super Flu

The H3N2 super flu causes the common symptoms of seasonal flu or other influenza A strains:

  • Fever higher than 39° Celsius (102° Fahrenheit)
  • Headache
  • Nasal congestion
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Sneezing
  • Loss of appetite
