Two of the injured were taken to receive medical attention.
The mishandling of fireworks during one of the pilgrimages to the Minor Basilica of Guadalupe resulted in an explosion that left several people injured, including two minors, on Sunday, December 7th.
The incident occurred during a pilgrimage of truck drivers, primarily those known as “piperos,” a group traveling along the Españita River Boulevard.
According to reports confirmed by authorities, the fireworks were being transported in the cab of one of the trucks and exploded due to mishandling.
Police officers, personnel from the National Defense Secretariat, and paramedics arrived at the scene and attended to at least half a dozen injured people, mainly those traveling in the truck. It was not clarified whether any required hospitalization. It was later reported that two injured people were transported in private vehicles to receive specialized care.
The group of truck drivers was waiting to join other transporters who had begun their Guadalupe pilgrimage from various points in the city; one of the largest groups departed from the northern part of the city, specifically from the El Saucito neighborhood.
At least six people were reported injured, including two minors.
They were all headed to the Minor Basilica of Guadalupe as part of the festivities on the eve of December 12th.
At this time, it is unknown whether they had a permit for handling fireworks.
The Civil Protection Directorate of the city government reported that taxi drivers and dump truck drivers had also joined the pilgrimage.
At the same time, the call to the public to avoid handling fireworks, especially on moving vehicles, was reiterated.
