The deceased was driving a Mitsubishi Outlander, traveling with her husband and three children to Tulum. She died when she crashed into a pickup truck stopped while attempting to pass another vehicle.
A foreign woman lost her life on the morning of Friday, November 28, in a serious accident on Federal Highway 307, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, near the Bahia Principe hotel complex.
The victim, preliminarily identified as a tourist from the United States, was traveling with her husband and three children toward the municipality of Tulum when the accident occurred.
According to witnesses, the family was traveling in a Mitsubishi Outlander when, while attempting to pass another vehicle, the driver—who later died—rear-ended a moving van that was stopped on the shoulder due to a mechanical failure. The impact was so severe that the family’s SUV was completely destroyed and a total loss.
After the initial collision, the out-of-control vehicle hurtled into another car: a Hyundai compact with Quintana Roo license plates, carrying a family on their way to spend the day at Xel-Há Park. This second impact also left the occupants injured, although the severity of each case has not yet been confirmed.
The woman driving the Mitsubishi was ejected and landed on the pavement, where paramedics confirmed she had no vital signs. Her husband and three children were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
Civil Protection personnel, paramedics, the National Guard Highway Division, State and Municipal Police officers, and staff from the State Attorney General’s Office arrived at the scene and began the corresponding investigations. The scene caused significant traffic congestion, as the vehicles involved remained on the road and the body stayed there awaiting forensic services.
The corresponding consular notification was made to assist the affected family, whose vacation ended tragically on one of the busiest routes in the Riviera Maya.
