The alleged nephew of Rafael Caro Quintero was arrested in 2023 with rifles, ammunition, a grenade launcher, and various drugs, according to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
The FGR reported that it obtained a conviction against Carlos “R,” identified in court records as Carlos Guillermo Retes Quiñones and/or Rubén Fernando Payan Adame and/or Rubén Fernando Roacho Adame, and identified as the alleged nephew of drug kingpin José Caro Quintero, one of the leaders of the Caborca Cartel, founded by his uncle, Rafael Caro Quintero.
According to the institution, the man was found criminally responsible for various drug trafficking offenses and illegal possession of firearms, including weapons restricted to the Armed Forces.
According to the official statement, the events date back to February 2023, when members of the National Guard (GN) arrested the individual in Chetumal, Quintana Roo. During the search, the agents seized an arsenal consisting of a handgun, a rifle, a grenade launcher attachment, 259 rounds of ammunition and 11 magazines of various calibers, as well as a bulletproof vest, nine cell phones, various documents, and a vehicle.
Along with the weapons and tactical equipment, the GN also seized 271.9 grams of cocaine and 44 MDA (ecstasy) tablets, with a net weight of 12.4 grams, which led to charges being filed for simple possession of narcotics.
Subsequently, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) presented evidence to a judge at the Federal Criminal Justice Center in Quintana Roo, based in Cancún, establishing the detainee’s criminal responsibility. After reviewing the evidence, the judge imposed a sentence of 11 years and 10 months in prison for the following crimes:
Simple possession of cocaine and MDA.
Carrying a firearm without a license.
Carrying a firearm restricted to the exclusive use of the Armed Forces.
Possession of ammunition restricted to the exclusive use of the Armed Forces.
