Mezhua Campos was mayor of Zongolica for the PAN-PRD coalition after the 2017 election and previously led the PRD in Veracruz.
Juan Carlos Mezhua Campos, former mayor of Zongolica and former state leader of the now-defunct PRD, was murdered on Sunday, November 23, in the town of Piedra Blancas, located in the mountainous region of that municipality.
The State Attorney General’s Office reported that it has opened an investigation into the incident and that the investigation is being handled by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Indigenous Affairs and Human Rights. The agency confirmed that the victim was identified in official records as J.C.M.C.
The Attorney General’s Office stated that prosecutors, forensic experts, and ministerial police are carrying out the corresponding procedures to clarify the crime. So far, no lines of investigation or possible suspects have been reported.
The institution stated that it will continue to gather evidence as part of the legal process.
Mezhua Campos was the mayor of Zongolica for the PAN-PRD coalition after the 2017 election and previously led the PRD in Veracruz.
In recent years, he sought to run as an independent candidate for governor and had initiated a movement to create a new political force.
On his personal Facebook page, members of his team posted a message announcing his death and expressing their views on the events.
The post reads: “With deep sadness, we report that our leader Juan Carlos Mezhua has been murdered (…) We ask everyone to offer a prayer for his eternal rest.”
The post does not provide further details about the circumstances of the attack.
Also, on December 9, 2024, Benito Aguas Atlahua, a federal deputy for the district, was murdered in Zongolica.
