Miss Universe 2025 has been overshadowed by accusations that Mexico’s ruling Morena party influenced the outcome to secure victory for its contestant, Fátima Bosch.
The glittering finale of the Miss Universe 2025 pageant in Nonthaburi, Thailand, was meant to celebrate beauty, talent, and cultural pride. Instead, the crowning of Fátima Bosch Fernández, a 25-year-old from Tabasco, Mexico, has ignited a political storm. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that the Morena political party, currently in power in Mexico, may have played a role in ensuring Bosch’s triumph.
Bosch’s victory made her the fourth Mexican woman to hold the Miss Universe crown. Yet within hours of her coronation, critics began pointing to her family’s close ties to the “Cuarta Transformación” movement, Morena’s flagship political project. Reports claim that several judges resigned before the final, citing irregularities and pressure from organizers. The controversy deepened when Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú, owner of the Miss Universe franchise, was accused of leveraging political and financial connections to favor Bosch.
The accusations gained traction because Bosch had already been at the center of controversy weeks earlier. During a livestream, Nawat Itsaragrisil, the Miss Universe Thailand director, insulted Bosch, calling her “stupid.” The incident sparked a walkout by fellow contestants and drew international attention. Supporters argue that Bosch’s resilience and dignity in the face of public humiliation made her a deserving winner. Detractors, however, insist that her victory was less about merit and more about political maneuvering.
For Morena, the scandal is particularly sensitive. The party has long sought to project itself as a champion of national pride and cultural representation. A Miss Universe crown for Mexico fits neatly into that narrative. But if proven true, the allegations of interference could undermine both the credibility of the pageant and Morena’s image abroad. Political analysts warn that the controversy may fuel opposition claims of corruption and favoritism, echoing broader criticisms of the party’s governance.
Bosch herself has remained largely silent on the matter, focusing instead on her humanitarian projects and public appearances. Pageant officials have denied any wrongdoing, insisting that the judging process was fair and transparent. Still, the combination of resignations, political connections, and financial interests has left many unconvinced.
As investigations continue, Miss Universe 2025 risks being remembered not for its celebration of global beauty, but for the shadow of politics that loomed over the crown.
