Tabasco Police Accused of Killing Young University Student

Rodrigo Isidro Ricardez, a student at the Juárez Autonomous University of Tabasco (UJAT), was killed by police officers from the State Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, who blocked his path, chased him, and shot him, according to his family.

The attack occurred on the evening of Friday, November 14, as the 20-year-old, a second-semester veterinary medicine student at UJAT, was leaving his family’s ranch.

According to local reports, he was pursued after passing a checkpoint, caught up with state police officers, and shot to death in the José María Pino Suárez neighborhood in the municipality of Centro. In response to the incident, a demonstration was called for this Saturday, November 22, at 9:00 a.m. at the Tabasco State Attorney General’s Office to demand justice.

The state agency affirmed that it has already opened an investigation to clarify the case. “The Directorate of Forensic Services and Sciences, as well as the Directorate of the Investigative Police, are carrying out the necessary procedures, including expert analyses, technical examinations, and interviews, to strengthen the investigation,” it stated.

In a press release, it reiterated its commitment to legality, transparency, and a zero-tolerance policy for impunity.
