Reports indicate it “may have been a homemade device.”

An explosive device detonated Tuesday night at a beer store in the La Foresta neighborhood of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, injuring one woman and causing considerable damage to the store’s facade.

The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Manuel J. Clouthier Avenue, near the corner of Álamos Street, across from the Hacienda Victoria Market and a few meters from sports fields.

The Mazatlán Municipal Public Security Secretariat (SSP Mazatlán) reported that security forces from all three levels of government and emergency services responded after receiving a 911 call.

A woman sustained various injuries and received on-site medical attention. She is currently reported to be in stable condition. The explosion also caused material damage to the establishment.

Regarding the cause of the explosion, initial official reports suggest it “may have been a homemade device.”

Authorities indicated that the Sinaloa State Attorney General’s Office will be responsible for expanding the investigation to determine the motive and the type of device used.

The municipal agency reiterated its call for citizens to report any emergency situation to 911 so that security personnel can respond promptly and provide the necessary support.

Local media reported that paramedics from the Mazatlán Volunteer Fire Department treated the woman, identified as 30-year-old Selena “N,” who was transported to a city hospital.

According to witnesses, armed individuals arrived at the location on a motorcycle and threw an explosive device at the entrance of the store. The detonation caused structural damage to the building and shattered windows.

Agents from the State Attorney General’s Office, members of Civil Protection, and Navy personnel remained at the scene to conduct investigations and rule out any further risks. Firefighters and Civil Protection also removed a gas tank from the business to prevent another explosion.

In addition, Manuel J. Clouthier Avenue was closed approximately one kilometer before the store, and motorists were diverted to Del Sol Avenue as part of the security operation.

According to information gathered by El Sol de Mazatlán, this is the third beer store attacked with explosive devices in Mazatlán in recent months.

The attacks have occurred in outlying areas of the city. In one of the previous cases, a person died hours after the attack.

The affected store is located in a residential and commercial area frequented by young people and families. Residents of the area stated that the store had already been shot at earlier this year, although that previous incident only resulted in property damage.

In December 2016, three men were shot and killed across the street from this store.

The store is a popular gathering place at night, with vehicles often playing loud music and people drinking beer in the street.

The attack coincides with the current travel advisory issued by the Canadian government for Sinaloa, as well as 13 other Mexican states, recommending that Canadian citizens travel only to tourist areas in Mazatlán.
